Western Australia's historic mining town …
The outback gold mining town of Kalgoorlie offers many interesting sights and attractions. Hannan Street is the main street filled with old nineteenth century buildings, hotels and big corner pubs like famous Exchange Hotel.
The spectacular Super Pit is a working gold ore mine, similar to the Grand Canyon. From the Lookout you can gaze into the depths of the gold mining pit. 4WD and bus tours visit wildflowers and Aboriginal bush culture, while Gold Rush tours visit ghost towns and nearby goldfields.
Travelling on the Indian Pacific Railway is a great way to see Kalgoorlie, as the train crosses Nullarbor Plain from east coast to Perth, Western Australia. Tours of Hay Street and the old brothels, including Langtrees 181 renovated bordello are a major tourist attraction in Kalgoorlie.
Festivals held every year include the Kalgoorlie Cup, a great horse racing event every September. Boulder also hosts the fun Undies 500 car rally in February, where participants compete wearing only underwear. Boulder Market Day each month displays a brass band and stalls along Burt Street. Royal Show and Mining Expo occur in October.
The famous Golden Mile can be seen by Golden Mile Loopline Railway, or take a joy flight over the site. The historic Museums and Mining Hall of Fame offer a good insight into the history of the gold prospecting days and founder Paddy Hannan who discovered gold here in 1893. Restored old cottages, interesting stories and gold digging tools are on display.
The Edwardian-style Town Hall contains an art gallery, and the Goldfields Arts Centre hosts regular exhibitions and displays by national artists.
